Jesse King is a brilliant black assistant DA in Detroit. He has worked hard to put his poverty-blighted childhood behind him, taking giant steps up the professional and social ladder. But his life takes a 180-degree turn when Detroit mayor Harris Yancy is found brutally slain in his own home - the victim of two masked gunmen. The prime suspect is Ramona Blake, the dead mayor's lover. Even more damning, she was with him at the time of the murder and fled the scene with a locked black briefcase. To the police, it's an airtight case, but to Jesse King, who has just been handed the opportunity of his career, the facts don't quite add up. Convinced that Ramona is a victim too, Jesse initiates his own investigation ... and ends up implicated in the murder. Forced to flee for his life, Jesse descends into the bowels of inner-city Detroit - mean streets he thought he'd never walk again. Here he becomes the target of desperate killers, caught in a deadly cross fire between rival gangs and the town's even more dangerous powerbrokers. As his survival skills are stretched to the limit, he makes a discovery that will blow the lid off a city teetering on the edge of full-blown disaster.
